THE SMITTEN SERVANT OF THE ALMIGHTY
1. "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken
me?
Psalm 22:1
Surely He hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows:
yet we did esteem Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
(Isaiah 53: 4 )
Fulfillment
"And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying,
Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou
forsaken me?"
Matthew 27:46
It was commonly accepted that heavy affliction was an indication of God's
anger or displeasure with some enormous sin. This idea prevailed among
the Jews of all ages. Their history abounds with instances of God's immediate
interposition to punish sin. Jesus, God's perfect, Lamb, was stricken,
smitten of God and afflicted because of your sin, every ones sin, and
yet He was pure, and without any spot or blemish.
